Third one...
TITLE: Responsibility
AUTHOR:
rushikayu13
FANDOM: Battle Royale (movie)
CHARACTER: Yukie Utsumi
GENRE: Gen.
TABLE: Time
PROMPT: #3 -Hours.
RATING: PG.
WORD COUNT: 555 words.
SUMMARY: Because even the class rep has doubts (happens between Nanahara arriving at the lighthouse and the actual lighthouse scene).
WARNINGS: Spoilers for part of the movie (up to the lighthouse scene).
DISCLAIMER: I own absolutely nothing.
The clock in the lighthouse ticks away the hours, second by second.
Ticking away the short time they had left. How long would it be before this place was made a danger zone and they all had to go back into the fight for their lives? This time was a respite for the others in the building, but for Yukie Utsumi, who had ended up practically volunteering to think up an escape plan, this atmosphere was not letting her think clearly.
She had thought that having Shuuya Nanahara around -Shuuya, who had regularly hung around Shinji and Hiroki, arguably two of the clearest thinkers in their class- would stabilise her a little. Take a little of the pressure off her so that she could work out a plan.
It wasn't working. The teasing about her crush on him, while friendly and not meant to be harmful, was distracting her from her plan, and eventually, the time would run out and she'd have to admit to herself that she had no plan. That the organisers of the Program had thought of everything, and that if Kyouichi -who had been clever than her, if a little neurotic- had died before finding an escape route, what chance did she have?
She was losing her confidence. And that was all she had ever been able to count on. She hadn't been as clever as some of the other potential representatives, but she'd been more socially adept, more confident in her assurances that she was who the class needed.
Now, she wasn't what the class needed. In fact, a bossy pacifist with a gun was probably the last thing that their class needed right now. But that didn't stop her from feeling responsible to the class in general and the group of girls that had rallied around her in particular. So, when Shuuya mentioned that one of the transfers had a plan, she went along with it. Just because she wasn't as useful anymore didn't mean that she couldn't help the people that were still useful.
If she could manage to keep confident, and regularly remind herself that her responsibilities to this group came first, Yukie was sure that she could get them all out of this death-trap alive. That was her plan. She -with Shuuya's help- could talk the transfer into taking them when he decided to break out, then all escape together. She'd have to look after them from there, since they could never go back home. But she'd be okay with that.
Responsibility was her main talent, after all.
So first, she had to talk the others through what little Shuuya had told her of Kawada's plan. It wasn't much -certainly not as much as she would have liked- but she still had her touch. She was sure that she could get the girls to back Shuuya. Yuko's terror might cause her a problem, but surely she could make the other girl see reason. It was clear to everyone else that he wasn't a killer, so it wouldn't take that long. She could even offer to not give him a gun, meaning that they were clearly in charge and that they'd shoot him if he did try anything -which he wouldn't.
Surely that would be enough to persuade her. Or at least, that's what Yukie assumed.
