I finished reading 1984 yesterday. I actually like it more than Animal Farm, strangely enough. It's really interesting simply for the political irony value. For example, the English government in 1984 is an Old-Labour style government warped into a egalitarian parody. In the actual year 1984, Margaret Thatcher's Conservative party were in power and, while I despise the policies of that government, it is still about as far from the government in the book as can be obtained by a democracy.

They should have renamed it 2004 as an accurate prediction of Blair's government instead.

In the book 1984, Britain was absorbed by the United States. Call me paranoid, but from the way that we're going now, I don't think that's too far off. God'll tell Bush to declare war on us eventually.

...And if you disagree with me, please say so.
