Manga Hirono fic, since she is so damn cool and I didn't like the scene where Froggy(for once, I'm not describing Taku by that) killed her. So yeah.

Story Name: Desperate Times...
Story Genre: Battle Royale(manga)
Story Rating: T/PG-13 for Hirono's foul mouth.
Disclaimer: For a start, if I owned the BR manga, Mitsuru would have confessed his love for Kazou right before he got shot, Chigusa would have beaten the hell out of Mitsuko...
Summary: Shimizu Hirono has been a rebel, a prostitute, a drug dealer...anything you can name on the seedy underbelly of the Greater East Asia Republic, she’s done it. She was supposed to get shot by Kaori and then drowned in a well by Oda. But what if that didn’t happen?
Spoilers: Volume 4, mostly. I’m using the Giffenised manga because I don’t have any skills in any language except English.

She was fighting Minami Kaori, of all people. She had thought her first fight would be against Numai Mitsuru, Chigusa Takako, Tsukioka Shou, maybe even Noda Satomi or Motobuchi Kyouichi. The students tough enough or weird enough to hold their own in a fight but not good enough for her to actively avoid. That honour went to the people like Mimura Shinji, Kawada Shogo, probably Sugimura Hiroki and Nanahara Shuya too. She didn’t think the last two would attack her, but she wasn’t sure.

But Minami Kaori?! That was insulting. The pimple-faced freak actually thought she would win a gun fight against her?! Bitch. Crappy-aimed rabid bitch.

No taste in music either. Fucking sissy crap. Bet that Junya guy she fancies is actually a girl. Or a eunuch. She didn’t know exactly what a eunuch was, but she could make some pretty accurate guesses.

"Killed the kitty. Nasty poking kitty. Gotta get back. No more pizza-face. No nasty slut girls poking. Making it worse." Drool and what looked to her vaguely like pus dripped from Minami’s mouth, grotesquely twisted into a parody of a smile.

Karma. Gotta be karma. I bullied Minami, now she’s gone completely ape-shit and if I don’t kill her quick, she’s gonna kill me. But at least I have a chance. ...Not like Kitano and Kusaka. Yes, rather have her shooting at me than Kiriyama.

"Fucking rabid bitch!" Her own voice came out slightly hysterical and very, very angry.
Dimly, she had a recollection of her grandmother, only law-abiding person she could remember in her family, chastising her when she was younger for her language.

"Hirono! I did not manage to get custody from your disgraceful parents to have you talk like a woman of negotiable affection!"
"What does that mean?" Little Hirono, six or seven years old, had asked her, but the old lady had shook her head and answered,
"You’re not old enough to know that yet. Now run along!"

Kaori’s shot caught the corner of the wall that she was hiding behind and she swore, attempting to aim at her again.

"Goddamn crazy-ass bitch!" She fired. The recoil on her gun caused the shot to hit the wall to the left of Minami’s head.
"Shit! Gun kicks too hard to aim! Shit!!" She was so dead. Mitsuko wouldn’t be happy with her. That is, if there was enough left of Mitsuko to even...

No, can’t think like that. Mitsuko would never...get a grip on yourself, Hirono.

"Hmm-mmm, bestest ever. Killed the kitty, bad poking kitty. Junya knows mmm...No more pizza face!"

To that, she could only think of one answer. Firing again, eyes narrowed in concentration, she yelled angrily.

"Die, dammit! Die!"

Both shots missed. Minami, still grinning, started to chant.

"Play to win! Play to win!"
"Die already! Shit!" She moved back as one of Minami’s bullets hit the wall again.

A single shot broke the stand off. She turned around to face this new enemy and gaped in shock.
There, a smoking gun pointed in the air, stood Nanahara Shuya. She couldn’t believe it. Was he playing? Had this game broken him too? She reckoned it had. Not many sane people would get in the middle of a gunfight.

"Well, damn all..." She muttered, about to tell him what she thought of his Elvis-impersonating, anti-authoritarian attitude, when he started talking.

"Playing it the way they want, are you? Playing the game like good little government patsies...that it?"

Minami looked at him, speechless. Hirono on the other hand was far from it. How dare he imply that she was doing anything but defending herself?! With a glare, she started yelling back.

"Huh! Up yours, Nanahara! I didn’t ask for this any more’n you did! She took first shot! What? I’m supposed to duck ‘n’ cover ‘n’ ask her to stop?"

With a slight smile, Nanahara threw the gun away.

"What the hell, it’s worth a try. Please...stop. No more shooting. No killing. Please.

It’s the way they’ve set it up that gets to you. The fear they instil in you. Only they’re saying it has to be that way. I’m saying it’s not kill or be killed. And I’m not alone."

For the first time since she had seen the knife get Fujiyoshi in the head, she felt shock. And for the first time since she could remember, she also felt a little hope come through.

"Huh."
"There are others. Noriko, Kawada...You’re not alone in this."
"I don’t see anyone else with you."

His smile widens at that.

"Yeah...well...y’know...You guys were having at it. Thank god you’re both crappy aims. Listen to me...Kawada knows a way out of this shitty game!"

It sounded too good to be true. Probably was. The second she let down her guard, Minami would probably shoot at her. And Nanahara would probably just watch in shock, the naïve idiot.

"So we’re just supposed to trust you?"
"Why not? I’m not the one packing heat."

“Not...not alone?”

He smiled at Kaori then and nodded reassuringly.

"That’s right. Not alone, Kaori. Together, we can get past this. Together."
"Maybe...maybe we can...escape?"
"Sounds like a plan. Get off this goddamn island. Kick back and mellow to some Junya tunes, eh?"

The mad girl had tears of joy in her eyes.

"Junya...Kick back with Junya...Bestest ever..." She took her finger off the trigger of her gun and Nanahara beamed in response.

"Junya. Yes. Just...Just...Keep thinking that. Junya...right?"

At this, Hirono just had to say it. There could only be one description of a person that walked into a gunfight and attempted to sincerely persuade them to stop fighting,

"You’re crazy...You do know that, right?"

She thought it would wipe that cheerful smile off his face. Instead it widened, bringing a tiny answering smile to her own face.

"Guess I do."
Her voice softened slightly.

"Yeah...but good crazy...Good crazy...I can relate to that."
"Glad to hear it. Crazy’s always better with company."

Her voice, subconsciously, took on a gently chiding tone.

"...Seen some way stupid moves...But stepping into the middle of a gunfight...Goddamn, Shuya!"
"Yeah...common sense was never my strong point..."

It was at that point that Kaori fired on her again. In her insanity, she missed and the bullet slammed into the wall. Hirono fired back on instinct. The bullet struck just above Kaori’s collar and tore through her neck. She fell to the ground, a halo of blood encircling her head.

"I...I...I’m sorry...I didn’t mean to..." She looked at Nanahara’s shocked face and handed him her gun. When he gave her a quizzical look, she replied.

"I’m not safe with it. I wasn’t going to play. Really."
"I know. She did attack you first. I wonder why...?"

"She was mad. That’s why. No one was home."

Kawada Shogo, Nakagawa Noriko dangling in his scarred and muscled arms, came around the corner. He gave Hirono an interested glance as if he was sizing her up, predicting how much she could help and nodded, turning to Nanahara.

"What were you thinking? Leaving her alone like that so you could run off and get yourself killed! And for the umpteenth time, stop yelling." He then inclined his head towards her.
"So, did your optimism actually work for once?" She gave him an odd glance.

"What’s that supposed to mean? I’ll help out, if you don’t mind that I’ve just murdered one of my classmates..."
Kawada, surprisingly, gave her a slight smile. It lightened up his entire face and made her realise that, even with the scars, he wasn’t so bad looking after all. And, even though she was very scared of him, she realised that she could probably trust him more than even Mitsuko at this point.

It would be a desperate attempt. She knew that. But right now, she didn’t care. If it meant wiping that sick smirk off Kamon’s ugly bloated face, she would put her trust in anybody and try anything.
