I know it's weird, but have you ever been sad when you've finished a fic or series? Because I don't think I wanted this one to end. Now 'Other Side of the Mirror', I would be more than happy to see finished...
So here it is. The last Hikasa/Hosaka fic.
Story Name: Is it too late? Nothing to salvage...
Story Genre: Battle Royale II
Story Rating: T/PG-13 for character death. And quite a lot of it.
Pairings: Hikasa Shota/Hosaka Yasuaki
Disclaimer: Okay, I don’t even speak Japanese fluently, what could possibly give anyone the impression that I own BR II? Title this time from Tatu’s ‘Friend or Foe’. I own one of their albums.
A/N: The dialogue that I borrowed from the movie is taken from the subtitles on the Tartan PAL copy of BR II. This is the actual last fic in the series consisting of ‘Planet Hell’, ‘This isn’t the way I thought I’d die...’ and ‘Tore apart at the seams...’ This is perhaps the first series I’ve written that I didn’t want to end. But hey, it lasted ten months, right? And you never know, I might write more in the future.
‘Is it too late?
Nothing to salvage,
You look away,
Clear all the damage...’
This was not a good situation. They were trapped with a small army of terrorists above them, ready to shoot at any moment. He wondered if they knew that they weren’t adults, if they realised that they were just playing into the government’s hands if they killed them.
"Come on, over here!" One of the girls was shrieking. He assumed it was Shindo, because that was basically what she tended to do. He wanted to huddle up against the wall and hope that no-one shot him, but he wouldn’t do that without Hosaka.
He couldn’t.
The assorted terrorists called for them to surrender their weapons. He didn’t think they would do that if they thought that they were soldiers. Although, weren’t some of these kids a little young to be terrorists? A few of them were even younger than his class.
He notices Kurosawa and Kitano preparing themselves to fire back. He knew that they wouldn’t have thrown down their weapons under any circumstances, but this would get them killed. All of them. Kitano’s finger is just about to pull the trigger to fire on one luckless terrorist...
Bang! Her rifle flew out of her hands and into the water.
"What do we do now, Kurosawa?" If this was anywhere else, he’d laugh at the look on Jo’s face. As it is, he looks away from the three remaining gang members and turns toward Hosaka and Nosaka, who seem to be having a heated argument of their own.
"Let’s surrender, Maho."
"I’ll never give up!"
She drags Hosaka back into the water with her when he tries to escape and as he and Hosaka share an ominous look, proceeds to yell at Nanahara, even when he’s clearly not in the room.
Then again, this base having such thin walls, he could probably hear her anyway.
"Nanahara Shuya! Come out! It’ll only be over when you die! I’ll get you! Come out!"
Despite knowing that her recklessness would kill him any moment now, only one thought is passing through his head right now.
Damn, Nanahara, I guess making friends and influencing people in a good way isn’t one of your strong points, right?
Hosaka grabs her and starts shaking her to force her to calm down, but she knocks him off.
"Kurosawa...Let’s give up."
Pretty much everyone’s eyes are drawn towards Jo and he flashes back to some of the conversations between their team earlier in the game.
"I don’t want any more people killed. By the government or Wild Seven. Now, if I let you go, will you not try to attack the bloke twice your size again?"
"I think we all thought that they’d just go on a manhunt and wouldn’t care who got in their way.”
"Why the hell is he second-in-command of the Shubultz Cuts if he doesn’t want to see anyone die?"
Kurosawa doesn’t like the idea of giving up. Hikasa can’t blame him, if he was in Kurosawa’s position, he probably wouldn’t give up either. Besides, when Kitano gets her weapon back, she’s going to die and his collar’s going to blow his neck to shreds anyway. He doesn’t want to have to watch someone else die like that.
"Can you forget the pain? I can’t! You killed our families! Do you understand? Can you feel my pain at losing my family so suddenly? Their bodies were blown to pieces. My parents and my little sister…there wasn’t enough left of them to make a body. What’s terrorism? What’s your war? I will never forgive you!"
"Stop it!"
It’s one of the younger terrorists that speaks, a kid with a red scarf.
After Kurosawa instinctively aims at him, he continues.
"We are the same! We are just like you! So just drop your gun!"
The moment he moves his gun away from Kurosawa’s face, Nosaka screams for him to shut up and fires as many shots as she can into his body.
As two other Wild Seven members jump onto the ledge that the kid had previously occupied, presumably to kill Nosaka, Jo and Nanami start firing at them. He notices that Jo’s eyes are screwed shut and shakes his head slightly.
We are so totally screwed.
Since, when Nosaka dies, his collar will go off and kill him too, he fires at one of the terrorists and misses. Hosaka’s firing too, with even worse aim than him and he doesn’t understand why Hosaka couldn’t just stop firing and stop himself from getting murdered.
It’s Jo that dies first, caught in both the stomach and the head. Then a split second later, Nanami falls, having been shot repeatedly by multiple terrorists. Kurosawa catches his body just before he hits the floor and mourns the death of his last friend.
He looks away to find Hosaka and Nosaka leaning against each other. The water around them is coloured red and their eyes are closed.
But I never got to say goodbye...
"I think that you’re nice."
"Yes, you’re cute. Do you have a problem with that?"
"Now, if you don’t like me back, you can just say so."
He knows his collar’s going to go off soon. Probably after Shindo’s and Natsukawa’s, so he’ll have the ‘pleasure’ of watching their necks blow up first. He isn’t going to see that.
He wants to die on his own terms.
Wait for me. I’ll be there in a minute...
