There are people -genuine psychiatrists- that say that it's impossible to feel pain while sleeping. And usually, that's true. You wake up right before the monster catches you, or the shark bites you in half, or -as is common for several of the people he's travelling with- the sniper blows a hole directly in the middle of your forehead.

He must be the exception that proves the rule then. Every time he closes his eyes, he's back on that island. In exactly the same place at exactly the same time. He always knows what's going to happen next. He knows Taguchi's going to die first, then Totsuka's collar blows up and then the trip mines all go off. And this is where he should wake up.

But he doesn't. He doesn't wake up until after his body has been burned and shredded almost beyond recognition. He knows that it couldn't be more than a couple of seconds -he doesn't even get the chance to blink before it stops hurting and he wakes up- but it feels like forever.

And someday, he knows that he won't wake up from it.
