You know, on the 5th of November, I'll have been writing this fic for a year? *smiles* I didn't think it'd be like this. I thought it'd be just over a third of the size of this and a Maezono/Makimura fic. I suppose I like it better this way.

Story Name: On the other side of the mirror...
Story Genre: Battle Royale II
Story Rating: T
Pairings: Maezono/Nanami, Kurosawa/Jo, Shindo/Hikasa, Hosaka/Hasuda and Shimura/Kuze.
Summary: (So AU the characters might actually end up dancing) What if Nanahara never bombed Tokyo, but all the characters ended up at Shikanotoride anyway?
Disclaimer: If I owned BRII, you'd know. For a start, Saki would have shot Aoi and Shindo, rather than Jo and Nanami. Kyoko would have ran up the tunnel instead of Shibaki, Shintaro would have confessed undying love to Maezono...you get the picture.
Special Note: Anyone confused by the mafia terminology should go to the Wikipedia article on it here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28game%29

Sakurai Haruya slept. In the small, ugly room that he currently shared with a loudly snoring Urabe, he dreamed.

He was late for the funeral. He couldn’t remember who’s funeral it was, but they must have been important, otherwise he wouldn’t have bothered being on time. He vaguely remembered someone dying, something to do with boats, and a small room. With water and people screaming. And he saw his sister again, only everything was wrong with her.

There weren’t many people there. Aoi and Asakura were quietly talking in one corner. Aoi’s hair kept shifting from black to blonde and Asakura was crying. Shindo and Hasuda were in another corner, Shindo had an arm around Hasuda and they were both trying to look brave.

There was a large mirror near one of the coffins. But it didn’t show the room. The image kept flickering and changing. From a rugby game, to a classroom. From the classroom to a cage. From the cage to a few boats on a sea. To an abandoned beach, a ruined house, a forest...

He looked in the mirror. To a large fire with a group of people huddled around it. He saw himself with a guy he didn’t know. But there was so many people missing…Where were they all? Where were Makimura and Motomura to look after them? Where were the rest of his friends?

What had happened?

He turned around, not wanting to look at the mirror anymore...

...To find Makimura sat up in his coffin, staring at him. Apparently not noticing the gaping wound in his neck, he waved cheerfully at Sakurai.

"Nice funeral, isn’t it?" Sakurai could do very little but stutter out.

"But...Shintaro...your neck. How can you...be talking like that?" Makimura touched his neck and looked at the blood that came off on his fingers, shrugging.

"It’s not real. Like one of those tricks when people cut a woman in half and put her back together again. Don’t be so worried, Haruya. My neck’s fine."

"I think he’s been watching too many zombie movies." Even under the burned uniform and the dried blood staining his face, he would recognise the teasing grin Maezono shot him anywhere. As well as the deliberately inappropriate comment. Zombies should never be mentioned at funerals.

Especially not by dead people at funerals.

"...I think you’re right." Makimura was starting to smile as he agreed.

"Well, technically everyone has to be right at some point. Unfortunately, since Kenji’s been proven right before he turned 30, I owe Naoki my house." Urabe, ignoring the bullet holes in both his stomach and forehead, added with a quick glare at Maezono, who tried his best innocent look. That made Makimura start laughing, the wound on his neck open up again and then Sakurai woke up.

"Hey...Shugo?" Urabe stirred and faintly grunted.

"Uh?"

"Can you check that you don’t have any bullet wounds in your forehead? I know it sounds crazy, but it’ll make me feel better." To his credit, Urabe didn’t say anything about it. He gave Sakurai a weird look and ran one hand quickly over his forehead.

"Nope, no bullet wound. Nightmare?" Sakurai nodded as a reply and Urabe’s look became piercing.

"If it was that bad, maybe you should tell me about it. You know, misery loves company and all that. Besides, I’m already awake now, so you might as well tell me."

So Sakurai started talking. When he was finished, Urabe looked slightly annoyed.

"Haruya, my nightmares involve getting cut open by a doctor and realising that he’s forgotten to give me anaesthetic. Shintaro’s have him performing in a rock band naked and...well, I hope Kenji was joking about what his nightmares are about because Ryo’s hair is starting to look suspicious now. Compared to that, how is that a nightmare?"

Sakurai shrugged.

Shindo Risa was worried.

She didn’t know half of the names of the people that she was the class representative of. So, she mused about how to bring the class closer together and finally decided to take nominations on what they could do.

It wasn’t working, until Shimura finally asked how many people in the class could play Mafia. Not knowing what Mafia was, she shook her head. But Matsuki was nodding and starting to smile, Nosaka and Ai were slowly putting their hands up and Jo was having a whispered discussion with Kurosawa about what sounded like what the role of the psychic was about.

"Ok, so Matsuki, right?" Matsuki nodded at Shimura’s question. "Do you want to be narrator? Because we’re going to need someone that can keep track of the votes and I could never do that."

"Sure, I’ll narrate. Ten mafia game?"

"Most of us are new at this, make it nine but have one as the godfather, Matsuki."

"Ok, eight mafia, one godfather. One psychic, one sheriff. Two angels?" Jo nodded and added.

"Two devils too. Are you having anything else? Lovers, vigilantes, millers, that sort of thing?"

"Four sets of lovers, I think. No vigilantes or millers, but two rambos, because they’re fun."

"...So, how do we play?"

"I give everyone a card with their role written on the back of it. If nothing is written then you are a civilian. Then everyone votes for a person that they think is a mafia. Mafia vote for people that they want killed. You aren’t allowed to show anyone else your card.

There are nine mafia, who know who the other mafia members are. The godfather co-ordinates their attacks at night time. If investigated by the sheriff, godfather turns up innocent. The angels pick someone to save, who if targeted by the mafia, don’t die. The devils investigate to find the angels or rambos, while the sheriff investigates to find the mafia members. They then have to try and get everyone to vote against them. Rambos bomb people at night. They choose a person and the person alphabetically on either side of the victim dies too."

"What about the psychic and lovers?"

"If one lover dies, the other one commits suicide automatically. And mafia can be in love with civilians. It happens. Psychic? I’ll go through the role of the psychic later. Let me just scribble down the roles and then we can start."

She handed a card to everyone.

"Ok, now accuse! Let’s do this in order. Takuma?"

"I accuse Shiori." Matsuki wrote it down.

"Nao?"
"I accuse Kyoko."

"Shugo?"
"I accuse Ryo."

"Miki?"
"I accuse Eri."

"Osamu?"
"I accuse Shiori too."

"Kyoko?”
"I accuse Risa."
"But...Kyoko, I’m your friend. You know I’m not mafia, right?"
"Anyone could be mafia. Besides," Kakai made an attempt at a death glare and continued, "now I’ll pay back the grudge you always had against me!"

Shindo pretty much collapsed laughing at that.

"Ryo?"
"I accuse Naoki, because he’s falling asleep."
"I am not! Besides, you can’t see me from there anyway!"

"Ok. Shiori?"
"I accuse Shintaro. Because no-one else will. Also, he’s the perfect mafia member."
"Shiori! I’m not a mafia member! My card was blank."
"I don’t believe you."

"Haruya?"
"I accuse Kyoko too."

"Haruka?"
"I accuse Shota. Because if he was mafia, no-one would ever notice." Hikasa didn’t look deterred or upset at all. He just replied mildly.

"...I think I’d notice, Haruka." She rolled her eyes at him.
"Apart from yourself."

Matsuki kept taking down the votes. When everyone had voted, she stood up.

"Ok, Takuma, Kyoko, Ryo, Shiori, Tetsuya, Sanae, Naoki, Risa, Masakatsu, Jun, Shota, Maho, Kenji, Shintaro, Asuka and Eri have been accused. Now we have to vote again. But that’ll take too long so let’s just do this the quick way. Put your hand up if you don’t want to vote the person that you just accused."

Takuma and Osamu put their hands up.

"Change from Shiori to...? Takuma?"

"Kyoko." Matsuki wrote it down.

"Ok, she now has six votes. Osamu?"

"Tetsuya."

"Who now has two votes. Meaning Kyoko dies. And she..."

The entire class held their breath, waiting to hear whether they were right in accusing Kyoko as being a mafia member.

"...was a civilian. It’s now 9-39. It is now night time. Everyone put their heads on the desk and close their eyes."

Once all of them, minus Kakai and Matsuki herself, had done that, she continued.

"Godfather, write on the back of your card the name of the person that you want to kill." One person scribbled a name on the back of their card.

"Now, I’ll give it to all of the members of the mafia and they’ll tick it if they agree or write an alternative name if they don’t." This was done.

"Right, mafia go back to sleep. Angels, write the name of the people that you want to save on the back of your cards and I’ll take both of them in. Ok, Sheriff, write the name of the person that you want to investigate on your card and go back to sleep. Done? Devils, do the same as the Sheriff. Finally, would the rambos write the names of the line of three that they want to bomb and go to sleep. Everyone done? Ok."

"Daylight falls and seven people are dead. Naoki, Ryoko, Shintaro, Kazumi, Rena, Shota and Maho were killed during the night."

"And there’s a big crater of dead people around Kenji."

"Jun? When is there not a big crater of dead people around Kenji? I mean, this is the guy most likely to spend his work experience in a graveyard!"

"...They’re better company that some people I could mention, Shintaro.”
"Oh?"

"I’ll show you the list sometime, you might recognise some of the names on it. Anyway, Shiho, you forgot to tell us what the dead people were."

"Oh yeah, sorry. Ryoko, Kazumi, Rena and Maho were civilians. Naoki was one of the devils, Shota was mafia and Shintaro..."

"Yes?"

"...Was the godfather. We’re now on 7-34. Accuse!"

"Ryo’s mafia. It’s fairly obvious by now. I mean, he accuses Naoki, who just happens to turn up dead in the night. Very suspicious."

"Takuma, three people accused Naoki. Any of them could be mafia. Or none. Maybe the mafia wanted us to think that Ryo was one of them." Motomura argued from the back of the room and was interrupted by Shimura, who started to laugh.

"Asuka, right? How do we know that you aren’t just trying to stop us from accusing Ryo? This is the way I see it. It’s not likely that a mafia member accuses another one to die."

Motomura nodded.

"Your point?"

"That means that everyone that voted for either of them is either not mafia or a really good liar. Humour me people. Everyone that voted for Shintaro or Shota, tell me."

Kitano and Kuze nodded, Natsukawa and Yano waved and Maezono tossed a pencil at Shimura’s head.

"However, I do think Shiori could be that ruthless as to be a mafia member and vote against Shintaro anyway. I’m sorry, but that’s the image that you’ve been giving off." Hasuda disagreed, making Kitano shrug and answer.

"But isn’t that what a mafia would say?"

"So we have Shiori, who might be mafia. As opposed to Ryo, who is mafia." Aoi pointed out.

"Guys?" All eyes turned to Totsuka, who blushed, but carried on.

"I’m the sheriff and I investigated Shiori last night. She isn’t mafia."

"Unless you both are. That’s a possibility, right?"

Matsuki cleared her throat, indicating that they should be quiet.

"Takuma? Do you still accuse Ryo?" Aoi nodded.

"Ok, Nao? Who do you accuse?"

"I’m sorry about this, but Tetsuya knows far too much about this game and I’m wondering if it might not just be an act to try and convince us that he isn’t mafia."

"Shugo?"

"I’ll accuse Ryo again, I guess. I don’t know if he’s mafia or not, but the idea of him dressed like one of the stereotypical mafia people on TV gives me a funny image. And then there’s the idea of Shintaro doing a pseudo-Italian accent..." There was a lot of laughter at that.

"...Right. Miki?"

"I accuse Asuka. It just makes sense."

"Osamu?"

"I’ll accuse Asuka too."

At the end of the accusations, Matsuki looked up.

"Ok, the accused are Takuma, Ryo, Shiori, Tetsuya, Risa, Jun, Mayu, Kenji and Asuka. Does anyone want to change their votes? No? Ok, then Ryo is executed. Congratulations, you’ve killed a mafia member! Also, after Ryo’s death, his civilian lover, Shiori, committed suicide."

"Because everyone knows it’s canon for Shiori to be in love with Ryo."

"Naoki, you’re supposed to be dead. ‘Silent as the grave’ is a cliché for a reason."

"Methinks the lady doth protest too much."

"Naoki, if you don’t shut up, I’ll gag you, drag you to the nearest zoo and dangle you, head-first, in front of a hungry crocodile."

"...I’ll be good." Kurosawa snorted.

"Why do I sincerely doubt that?"

"The score is now 6-33 and it is now night time."

When all of the people that could act during the night time had done so, she woke them up.

"Another six people are dead as you awaken. Wataru, Asuka, Tatsuro, Mayu, Kenji and Kiyoshi were blown to shreds. Wataru, Tatsuro and Kiyoshi were civilians. Kenji..."

"Was mafia?"

"Couldn’t have been, he voted both Shintaro and Ryo. However, he could have been one of the other roles."

"...was one of the rambos. Asuka and Mayu were both mafia. The score is now 4-29. Accuse!"

The civilians had eventually won, after ‘executing’ the four other mafia members, who turned out to be Sakurai, Hasegawa, Yazawa and Yoshiyama. They’d enjoyed it, but agreed not to play another game. Mafia wasn’t meant to be played by 40 people.

She’d enjoyed it. Even Jo’s comments about her being desperately in love with Kurosawa, although she was sure that he was only saying it so that Kurosawa wouldn’t give him those odd looks so often. But she needed to talk to Makimura and didn’t think she could hold it off any longer.

"Hey, um...?"

"Shiori, we’re friends, or at least classmates. That means that you should call me Shintaro."

"Shintaro, can I talk to you privately? You can tell everyone in the class about it later, I promise."
